Star Wars: Fit for a Queen

Revenge of the Sith: Meeting with other senators to discuss Palpatine's increasingly tyrannical rule, Padmé wears a formal ensemble consisting of a pleated underdress, a velvet cloak and an intricate headress with snood.

Design: Though ultimately cut from the theatrical release of Revenge of the Sith, the Peacock Gown featured prominently in advertising and was even made into a Simplicity pattern. The fabric for the underdress was woven from two different colors - light blue and copperish brown. It was then tightly pleated so with the actress' movements and with different lighting conditions, the fabric would appear to change colors. The costume's headress was an equally complex creation. To create the thin, tight ringlets, the hairdressers had to carefully match swatches of real Russian hair to Natalie Portman's hair color. The matches had to be made under sunlight, as fluorescent lights do not reliably reflect true color. In addition, different colors of hair were mixed together to create realistic ringlets that looked natural, not flat and monochromatic. For the headress itself, Trisha Biggar had a pin she liked reproduced a dozen times. The reproductions were placed on hand-bent piano wire, then plated, and then lined with leather.
